JOHNOLAVI HAAHTI

JOHN OLAVI HAAHTI February 23, 1926 – Stewart, British Columbia May 13, 2017 – Oakville, Ontario John Haahti passed away at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital at the age of 91. John was the oldest of four siblings. John grew up in the community of Stewart, BC with his father John and mother Ida, who emigrated from Finland and his younger sisters: Laura, Eila (predeceased) and Miriam (predeceased). John studied geological engineering at University of British Columbia in Vancouver and then spent the rest of his life in Ontario, primarily in Toronto, while engaged in mining exploration in Northern Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec. Mining exploration changed greatly over that time. While prospecting and staking claims was a solitary pursuit, John shared numerous stories about encounters he had in the bush mostly with lost tourists who he assisted back to the local town. John loved sports and was a good tennis and baseball player in his youth as well as an excellent marksman. A private Memorial Gathering will be held at Smith’s Funeral Home. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated. (Arrangements entrusted to SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, BURLINGTON, 905-632-3333.) www.smithsfh.com
