LIONEL(MEL) BUTLER

LIONEL (MEL) BUTLER Another WWII veteran is no longer with us, a lifetime member of Baron Byng Legion No. 1. Mel passed away peacefully on June 28, 2016 at the age of 93. At his request, there will not be a service. Born in New Brunswick, he was raised in Timmins, Ontario. As an adult he made Toronto his home, where he married his wife Dorothy and raised their daughter. He was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards and get-togethers with many friends. Just about any sport was of interest to him. Hockey was a favourite and we never missed “Hockey Night in Canada”. Mel started boxing in the service as “Boots Butler” and is in the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame. Preceding him in death in 2001 was his wife of 56 years, Dorothy. Surviving him are his daughter Christine Gormley, his granddaughter Shannon Brown, her husband Philip Brown and his great-grandson Joseph Brown, all of Casper, Wyoming, USA. Mel was kind and generous to everyone and will be greatly missed. In his honour, we would like you to respect and remember all of our veterans.
