MARGARET(FOLEY) SHAMATA

MARGARET SHAMATA (nee FOLEY) May 16, 1918 – February 12, 2017 Margaret (Maggie) died peacefully in Victoria, BC, in her 98th year. Born in the Beaches in Toronto, she lived most of her life in that city. Daughter of Elizabeth and Clarence Foley, sister of her beloved brother William, cherished wife of the late Michael Shamata, mother of Mary (Peter) Lannan and Michael Shamata and grandmother of Matthew, Emily, Jonathan and Michael. Margaret was Legal Secretary to Joseph Sedgwick, QC for many years, a job she loved, but happily gave up to stay at home to raise her children. Volunteering was always an important part of Margaret’s life. She volunteered for Toronto’s Women’s Auxiliary dedicated to helping children with intellectual disabilities. Many of the women in the Auxiliary became her lifelong friends. She was part of the flower guild at Holy Rosary Church (her parish for most of her life) and volunteered for over 40 years at St. Michael’s Hospital, primarily in the Palliative Care Unit. Her children Mary and Michael thank the entire staff at Parkwood Court for the exceptional care and love they gave Margaret as she struggled with dementia during the last three years of her life. A special thank you to Father William Hann at Holy Cross Church in Victoria. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church on St. Clair Avenue W., on Monday, February 27th at 10:30 a.m., with a reception to follow at Barnsteiner’s Restaurant at Yonge and Balmoral. Margaret will be buried privately beside her husband at Mount Hope Cemetery.
