MARYLOVELACE (TURNER) BAILEY

MARY LOVELACE BAILEY (nee TURNER) 1938 – 2017 Passed away peacefully in Oakville hospital on April 21, 2017, at age 78, from complications of Parkinsons. Mary was born in Washington DC, but lived in China (Swatow) as a child, from 1939 to 1941 and 1946 to 1948. Her parents, Geneva Dye, an American medical missionary and Joseph Turner, a British businessman (linens), met and were married in China, Geneva returning to Washington for Mary’s birth. The Turners came to Canada in 1951, Joe setting up a subsidiary of a Northern Irish linen firm. They settled in Port Credit, where Mary went to elementary and high school. Mary then went to McGill University in Montreal, where she met Chris. Graduating with a BA (hon) in 1961, she went on to University of Toronto for a social work degree. Mary and Chris were married in January 1963 and then in September, headed off to England where Chris was on a post-grad fellowship. Their first- born son Michael was born 1 ½ months after they arrived in Britain. Poor as church-mice, they enjoyed their 2 years in Britain, returning to Canada in 1965. In Canada, Mary worked initially for the Children’s Aid Society, but often found the children’s situations distressing. So she went back to school to obtain Early Childhood Educator (ECE) qualifications. A co-founder of West-Oakville Preschool, she enjoyed over 20 years as a preschool educator, before stepping down in the early 1990s. Mary and Chris enjoyed many years of camping and canoeing, initially with family, then later canoe trips by themselves on various northern rivers. As they got older, they switched to vacation trips to various European and North American destinations. Mary is survived by her husband Chris, partner for 54 years and sister Barbara Hayne of Strathroy, Ontario. Beloved mother of Michael (Sarah), Gwen Mason (Frances) and Mark (Alena) and cherished grandchildren Megan, Catherine and Hanna, Geneva and Sydney Mason and Seth, Naomi and Chloe. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital for their kind and professional care of Mary. Visitation will be at the Kopriva-Taylor Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd.
