PRESTON, Melvin Alexander CD PhD DSc (Hon) FRSC On November 2nd in his 96th year after a distinguished career in theoretical nuclear physics. Professor at McMaster since 1953 and Vice-President (Academic) at University of Saskatchewan 1977-82. War-time service with Royal Canadian Artillery developing radar control for anti-aircraft. Later commander of 40 Battery in Hamilton. Eldest of six including Charlie (Mary), Alan (Mary) and Winnifred, pre-deceased by brothers Eric and Ralph. Leaves loving sons Jonathan (Caroline) and Richard (Helga), grandchildren Andrew (Kristina), Gwendolyn (Douglas), and Brittany, great-grandsons Simon and Elliot. Mel’s sweet character, gentle humour and adaptability made him a happy partner in three marriages. Married Mary Whittaker in 1947, died 1965. Married Eugene Shearer in 1966, died 1996. Devoted husband to Helen Howard-Lock since 1999, cherished second father to her daughters Nicola (Ben) and Pippa (Eric), and loving grandfather to their children Gordon, Kate, Ryan, Joshua and Jacob. Commodore Royal Hamilton Yacht Club 2001-02; judge in many sailing and sailboarding events. A lifelong devout Anglican, Mel had a particular passion for bridging the Christianity-science gap. The family is extremely grateful to the kind caring staff at Shalom Village, Hamilton, for expertly and gently caring for Mel for almost two years. Memorial Service at St. James, Dundas on Monday, November 28th at 11:00.
