Orest SUBTELNY

Passed away peacefully on July 24, 2016, after succumbing to cancer and dementia. Born May 17, 1941 in Krakow, Poland, he came to the US as a refugee. He received his PhD at Harvard University and after teaching there and at Hamilton College, he moved to York University in Toronto where he was Professor of History and Political Science until retiring in 2015. A prolific author in the fields of East European and Ukrainian history, he was best known for his book, Ukraine: A History. For his scholarly and educational contributions, he received the Order of Merit from the Government of Ukraine and the Shevchenko Medal from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. He is survived by his wife Maria, son Alexander, sister Oksana (Irenaeus) Isajiw, and family members in Canada, the US, and Ukraine. Visitation at Turner & Porter, Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., Toronto, on Thursday, July 28, 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Panakhyda 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 29 at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church, 135 La Rose Ave., followed by interment at Park Lawn Cemetery
