PROF. S. M. UZUMERI Passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 19, 2017, at the age of 86. Husband of Jean (nee Townsend) for 66 years, father of Vakur (Joanne) and Leyla (Resit), grandfather of David and Emre, brother of Yaman (Bezen), uncle to Aylin and Erol (Ayca), great-uncle to Alara and Derin, cousin to Demet and Uncle Mike to the Townsends. Beloved by all. Lifelong fan of Galatasaray S.K. His pioneering work in earthquake-resistant structural engineering saved lives around the world. He was patriarch and early founder of the Turkish- Canadian community in Toronto and a distinguished professor (Emeritus), administrator and mentor at the University of Toronto (1958-1993) and Middle East Technical University (1992- 2005). Like the concrete structures he studied, he was an unshakeable support for his family, friends and community. Following afternoon prayers at a mosque, we will gather at York Cemetery, North York, on Monday, January 23rd at approximately 2 p.m. for the interment.
