REV.ROBERT HAROLD JOHNSON

REV. ROBERT HAROLD JOHNSON On the evening of August 19, 2016, in Cobourg, Ontario, Rev. Robert Johnson passed into the presence of the Lord, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean M. Johnson, his sister Shirley (Robert) Taitinger and brother Wallace (Ellen) Johnson and his four children: Van (Karen) Johnson, Jan (Dan) Johnson-Theroux, Jeff (Donna) Johnson and Jennifer (Clark) Jensen and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers James and Eldon. Robert Johnson was born in Pembroke, Ontario, on May 15, 1931. Pastor Johnson came to Montreal in 1960 to pastor Verdun Pentecostal Church (later Trinity Pentecostal Church), where he was joined by his brother Wallace in 1963. By 1962, his influence was being felt beyond the church walls. It began with the popularity of Dial-A-Message, a sixty-second recording that, at its peak, was getting about 5,000 callers a day. A radio executive concluded that if 5,000 people were interested in listening to his recorded message, then they would listen to him on the radio. And so began 22 years hosting religious talk shows, first on CKGM and later, CFOX and CFCF. The show was “Ask the Pastor.” This radio exposure led to his appointment as chaplain for the Montreal Expos baseball team. It also opened up doors for him to raise money for charitable endeavours, including the establishment of a youth home, Teen Haven, to house youth coming through the juvenile detention system. He was still Executive Director at Teen Haven at the time of his death. His annual Christmas radio telethons to raise money to provide Christmas baskets for the needy became a fixture of the holiday season. He went on to pastor in Edmonton and then in Bakersfield, California. When in California, he co-founded Global Family Care Network that works in at-risk communities around the world with an emphasis upon girl-child trafficking. The funeral service will be held in the Tabernacle on the grounds of Lakeshore Pentecostal Camp, 1405 Pentecostal Road, Cobourg, Ontario at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 26th. Reception to follow. Visitation will be at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg, Thursday, August 25th, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Those wishing may make a memorial donation to Global Family Care Network.
