SMITH, Robert Greig On Sunday before dawn, March 5, 2017, Robert Greig Smith (Bob), husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, passed away suddenly while travelling to his favourite winter home in the Florida sunshine. Bob will be forever remembered by his wife and best friend of 45 years, Glenda Phillips Smith; his children, Lynda (Ed) Stanisz, Leslie, Robert, Richard (predeceased in 1992), Sarah (Marc) Henri, Adam (Wendy); his grandchildren Daniel (Daniela) Stanisz and Matt Stanisz; honorary Grandpa Bob to Sage Henri; his sister, Sharon and brother-in-law Gus Carubba; his sister-in-law Sandra Smith, brother Gary (recently predeceased); nieces and nephews Jeff, Steve, Lindsay, Brydan, Dan, Kelly, Gordon, Allan, Josee, Danielle, Gabrielle, Samantha, Jeff, Emma and Jamie; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Julie (Pierre) Gauvreau, Fred (Joanne) Phillips, David (Shelley) Phillips, and Ellen (Ron) Gagne; parents-in-law Graham and (Beryl Montgomery) Phillips (both predeceased); aunt-in-law Beverley Montgomery. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Bob was the first of three children born to Adam Horton Smith and Ethel Pearl Andrews (both predeceased). An avid story teller all his life, the tales Bob would tell about growing up across the street from the Ivor Wynne Stadium as a child. Of course, his sister Sharon’s stories about growing up with two older brothers are a little different. Life is complicated as family dynamics change, long distance family relationships can be difficult but somehow relationships grow stronger as time goes by. In 1969, the north impressed Bob with its opportunities and adventures starting with a joint venture with his brother in Temiscaming, Quebec. 1980 brought Bob to the Long Lake Valley in Sudbury to raise the newest members of the family in the most perfect of areas and follow his dream of starting a small industrial business. That dream, Sudbury Valve, Fitting & Control Ltd., kept the family busy for the next 30 years in great part due to the friendships, wonderful long time employees, and customers who supported local businesses. Looking back, we think of the best of times and the worst of times all dealt with grief, determination, courage, and joy. We also say goodbye to a man we loved, respected, had with us longer than we thought we would. We will miss him but know he is with family. Bob was one of the many miracles of the northern hospital system and cardiology programs of the early nineties. In 1991, Bob had a massive heart attack, followed by a quintuple bypass a few months later in the Memorial Hospital. We mention this at this time to cast light on our struggling hospitals and community services and to encourage any thoughts of a Memorial Donation be given to the lifesaving options in your town. Giving life to someone so they have a chance to see their sons and daughters grow up to be wonderful, caring, individuals the way Bob did. With great respect, we thank the doctors who have looked after Bob over the years. Bob wouldn’t have made it without all of you. We thank the many family, friends, new and old, neighbours here and away and coworkers who have shared their time and thoughts with us over the past month. You made a difference. No visitation is planned. Bob’s wish for a Celebration of Life at the Smith family cottage on the Ottawa River near Temiscaming, Quebec, where he loved to spend time since the seventies with all his family, is planned for August 12, 2017. Family and friends are welcome.
